CBD Cookies: Don’t Be Fooled!

Baking with CBD is creative and delicious and it can offer many wellness-boosting benefits. If you’re a sweet tooth, you might be partial to the odd CBD cookies here and there. But if you could eat a healthy cookie, that’s delicious and has mood-boosting benefits, wouldn’t it be incredible?

As the adoption of CBD continues and rises in popularity, so will the recipes. But don’t be fooled. Although cookies are delicious and CBD has many benefits, when the two are combined – they can be counterproductive for your wellness. Sugar-laden recipes might taste great but they’re not always great for your mental and physical well-being long term.

CBD used in baking can be healthy and it can be delicious. In this post, we’ll cover the benefits of CBD, and the negative effects of sugar and we’ll also cover the ways CBD can be used in food and recipes. Keep reading, we’ve also included a healthy cookie recipe!

The Positive Benefits of Baking With CBD

The CBD industry is flourishing and continues to grow year on year. In the UK alone, the industry is expected to reach one billion pounds by 2025. If the previous estimates are anything to go by, this industry will continue to grow and people across the globe will continue to reap the benefits.

But why is CBD so popular? Well, it’s easy to implement into your daily routine, it can help with your physical and mental well-being and it’s convenient to carry on the go. CBD is bursting with benefits and should be used on a regular basis for the best results possible. Whether that’s in your morning porridge or taken as a stand-alone supplement each morning or evening.

Baking with CBD is easy, it can be effective in the right recipes and it can be a delicious way to enjoy the supplement and all its benefits. Some of the biggest positives of using CBD in your baking can be…

Long-Lasting Effects

CBD edibles are a delicious way to benefit from the long-lasting effects. You wouldn’t even know you’re consuming the CBD with the right recipes and you’d benefit positively for up to six to eight hours (depending on the potency, concentration and type of CBD).

Easy to Consume

CBD oil can be incorporated into low sugar cake batter, low sugar frosting and so many other recipes. Savoury too! Including salad dressings and stir fry. The possibilities are endless and delicious too.

CBD Won’t Get You High

That’s right, after consuming CBD, you won’t feel high because CBD has no psychoactive properties. CBD is a naturally occurring cannabinoid that has positive benefits. It will leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated if consumed correctly.

It’s a Natural Wellness Booster

CBD has so many benefits – both mental and physical. So if you can consume it via baked goods – then it’s a winner. It can help combat fatigue, aid muscle recovery, help sensitive skin sufferers and help with mental health illnesses such as anxiety and depression.

The Effects of Sugar

Sugar has a bittersweet reputation when it comes to health. Sugar naturally occurs in many foods that contain carbohydrates. As with many products, it should be consumed in moderation and enjoyed sparingly.

However, if sugar is consumed over a long period and in excessive amounts it can cause all sorts of problems. Whether that’s physical or mental. Although CBD cookies can be packed full of mood-boosting goodness, they can be packed full of sugar too. It’s important to know the counterproductive effects of sugar and why CBD and sugar don’t go hand in hand, unfortunately.

In the short term, eating too much sugar may contribute to acne, weight gain, and increased tiredness. Over a long time, too much sugar can increase the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and even heart disease.

Risks of Eating Too Much Sugar

  • Low energy levels – even after one hour, you can feel your energy slump!
  • Low mood.
  • Increased symptoms of stress and anxiety.
  • Development of acne and eczema.
  • Increased heart rate.
  • More sugar cravings.
  • Tooth decay.
  • High blood pressure.

Although sugar adds sweetness to recipes and it can taste yummy, it also triggers the symptoms that CBD oil is trying to combat. This means that the CBD oil won’t work as effectively in recipes and you’ll be wasting your time, your money and you’ll be putting your health at risk.

You don’t have to cut sugar out entirely but you can substitute sugar for alternative sweeteners. Whether you use natural fruits, frozen fruits or fresh honey. Sweetness doesn’t need to be eliminated but sugar should be used sparingly when possible.

You need to be choosing what’s best for you, your goals and your health. If you’re an anxiety sufferer or you’re struggling with your skin health, making healthy simple swaps can help you take a positive step forward. To get the most out of CBD oil, it should be used alongside other healthy ingredients that contribute to your wellness – vegetables, natural fruits and refreshing drinks.

But it’s not all doom and gloom, in fact, you can still incorporate it into some yummy recipes that will help curb your sugar cravings. We’ll share a favourite of ours and give you an insight into how you should be using your CBD oil effectively in the kitchen.

How To Use CBD When Cooking

Although CBD oil can be used in baking, it can also be used in many savoury dishes too. Meaning you can cut down the sugar and also reap the benefits of CBD. Whether that’s sprinkled over soup, incorporated into a salad dressing or even included in a vegetable stir fry.

CBD can be used in almost any recipe you can think of. If you’re using an unflavoured variety, it won’t affect the taste of any existing ingredients you use either. It will simply just enhance the positive effects after consumption. CBD is an ingredient and is a supplement that can be used alongside a varied diet.

So experiment, have fun and see where you can add it. You can even mix it into drinks as a refreshing alternative.

Small Doses

If you’re not used to using CBD oil before, then start off small and slowly increase the dose you use. Remember, it’s not a miracle cure but between two to three droplets, to begin with, will be the best option. Also, CBD oil should be used regularly to benefit your long-term health.

No Direct Heat

CBD oil isn’t like any other regular cooking oil. A high temperature can affect the composition of the oil and reduce the effectiveness of CBD overall. If you’re going to use CBD with other ingredients that need to be heated, combine it with another healthy fat – coconut oil, olive oil, and avocado oil.

Keep It Cool

If you want your CBD to keep serving you, you’ve got to keep it out of the way of direct sunlight. Keep it tucked away in the cupboard and it will continue to stay fresh. Remember to always check the use-by date too – you want to ensure you’re getting the most out of your CBD!

Low Sugar Oatmeal CBD Cookies Recipe

Wholesome, subtly sweet and filled with slow-releasing energy, these cookies will leave you feeling satisfied and positive. Oats can improve your blood sugar level, they’re antioxidant-rich and they’re filling. With the addition of CBD, these cookies are the ultimate afternoon pick-me-up or evening treat.

In this recipe, the subtle sweetness comes from the natural fruits – whether you choose applesauce or banana – both offer many nutritional benefits and yummy sweetness.

Serving size: 30 cookies – plenty to go around or keep them in an airtight container for up to five days (if they last that long… They’re delicious!)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of quick oats.
  • 1 cup white whole wheat flour.
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder.
  • 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon.
  • ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce or mashed banana.
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter – melted and cooled.
  • 1 large egg.
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract.
  • ½ cup honey.
  • ¼ cup raisins.
  • ¼ cup well chopped raw walnuts or pecans.

Method

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the oats, flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the applesauce, butter, egg, vanilla, and honey. Whisk until blended. Pour the liquid mixture into the flour mixture and stir until combined. Fold in the raisins and walnuts.
  3. When ready to bake, place a rack in the centre of your oven and preheat the oven to gas mark four. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking sheet. With a cookie scoop or spoon, drop the dough into one-inch balls and arrange on the baking sheet – leave a one-inch space between the cookies too! They’ll get larger as they cook.
  4. With your fingers, gently flatten each cookie and put them in the oven for nine to 15 minutes – until they’re golden brown. Once cooked, transfer them to a cooling rack and let them cool for 10 minutes.
  5. Enjoy them with a hot beverage of your choice or as a pre or post-workout boost!
